Together with DOP Gilles Mosar, we created an independent and self-produced short film called 'The Catcher', which tells the story of Robin, a lonely young man, who works for the government as a catcher of invisible birds. The film had its world and Belgian premiere at Filmfestival Oostende on February 5th, 2026 and received a Special Mention from the Shortfilm Jury.
The short film deals about the impact of feeling invisible, through discrimination, social exclusion and in case of our film; loneliness. The urge to exist in a meaningful way might be one of our most basic needs. Emil Leysen, Kris Cuppens, Mieke De Groote en Damla Cengiz are part of the cast and composer Ruben De Gheselle (Young Hearts, Our Girls) has scored our film. The soundtrack will be released by the end of January 2026.
The short film has been completed in September 2025 and we have currently started submitting the film to film festivals. If you still want to support our festival run click on the banner below. Any donation, big or small will help us bring the film to audiences around the world. Follow our Instagram to find out when and where you'll be able to catch a look at our film or check back on this page below for our festival career.
The main goal was to create something out of passion and our love for cinema. We don't know what or where our short film will bring us in the future but let's just find out. If you want to stay up to date you can follow our dedicated instagram page or check back here for further updates on 'The Catcher'.

Director's Notes
For me, The Catcher started as a project that was going to explore themes of loneliness and feeling unseen in our modern society. The invisible birds function as a metaphor for freedom being restrained by expectations, aimlessness, and depression. I’m interested in creating worlds that closely resemble our own, with a subtle fantasy element added, allowing you to explore your characters in an unusual situation, dealing with universal themes.
While writing the script, my personal experiences naturally found their way into the story. The film follows an individual stuck in his daily life, moving through it aimlessly while being held back by unresolved trauma. The cage he carries works as a visual burden, something he is forced to carry at all times. It is also present in his home, constantly occupying the space, much like the thoughts he can’t escape. Halfway through the film, the cage becomes less of a weight and more of a symbol of escapism and relief—offering a possible way out .I liked how we dealt with trauma that way, both visually and storywise.
So while on the surface, ‘The Catcher’ might seem like a Hitchcockian, dystopian story, it is also a fable about someone breaking away from a meaningless life and trying to give a certain sense to his existence, which is something we are all craving for. Before returning to directing, I found myself stuck in a similar situation as well. Then one day, I saw an opportunity to take a leap and reconnect with filmmaking again. A few years later, I’m still moving in that direction, and this short film represents the culmination of five years of work and dedication to that dream. I’m incredibly curious to see where The Catcher will take me, as well as our cast and crew who made this film possible.

Notes from DP, Gilles Mosar
Shooting a short film was something I wanted to do for a very long time. When Luka sent me the script I immediately felt a connectionwith the story and the subject. Commercial work is often very flashy and as a DP you can try a lot of weird angles and techniques. I really enjoy those projects but what I often miss is depth in both the story and creative expression. Co-producing the film meant that we could do whatever we wanted, nobody would tell us what to do.
The cage and the feeling of being trapped is an imported aspect of the story and was something I really wanted to be visually represented throughout the film. One of the ways of doing this was by shooting Robin through the cage. But also by looking for elements on the location that mimic the cage, like window frames and doors. Choosing the 1.66 aspect ratio also added a more ‘caged’ or boxed feeling for me. It allowed us to use the full width of the sensor without becoming too narrow. 1.66 was the sweet spot for me.
Choosing the right locations and good blocking of the actors was a big part of the job, we didn’t have a big lighting truck and used minimal lighting setups. Mostly accentuating what was already there, placing the camera and the actors in a way that allowed us to work with the natural light and not against it. Overall I think Luka and I made something that is very close to what we envisioned at the start of this project and we are very grateful for everyone who helped us in bringing it to life. “
Notes from actor, Emil Leysen
I can still remember the moment I received an email from Luka through the Actors’ Guild. I was on the bus, on my way to a rehearsal, and I opened it briefly during the ride. It was one of the longest and most detailed emails I’d ever read, it included a comprehensive moodboard for the film and a complete backstory about Robin. The more I read, the more I got lost in Robin’s world. I was blown away by such a passionate and focused director.
At first, I thought it was a spam; it seemed too good to be true. A director who knows exactly what he wants and describes the character and his situation almost poetically in an email? That seemed too good to be true. But there I was, about a week later, Luka and I met in a café near the Leuven train station. From that moment on, I knew: ‘I think I can play Robin.’ I feel a connection and the necessary similarities, which allowed me to draw inspiration from my own life.” So I agreed!
During filming, I became more and more like Robin Dubois. I found ways to find him more quickly than on previous days, and I became increasingly familiar with him. On the last day of filming, when the iconic long coat was hung up, I stared at it for a moment and thanked him inwardly. I will miss that coat, the cage and everything about it. Robin and the countless crew members have enriched my life, taught me new things, but above all, moved me deeply. And that’s precisely why I’m so passionate about our profession!
